Meet in the Middle

Anyone reading this ready for an adventure!?! The Art Assignment is a weekly PBS Digital Studios production hosted by curator Sarah Green. The show takes you around the U.S. to meet working artists and solicit assignments from them that we can all complete as a global community. The first Art Assignment was definitely one that took me off guard, but looked super exciting and totally manageable. Plus it gave me an excuse to bust out Google Maps.

You can watch the first Art Assignment here.

Here is the step by step walk through of my experience with my first Art Assignment.

1. Pick a friend, and calculate the exact geographic midpoint between where the two of you live.

Well, this is John. John and I work together at the museum and have become crazy history buff people together. John has a degree in Philosophy as well as History and is my go to person for questions like "Hey, did they really slap a Knight during his Knighting ceremony?" (BTW, they did!!!) We enjoy a lot of the same movies, appreciate a good bottle of wine, and can often be found picking on each other. In general he's a great person to Meet in the Middle because he's pretty much always got something interesting to say.

Then we had to find our midpoint. He is much better at this stuff than I am. Eventually we settled on the appropriate midway point, based on a driving route, because let's face it...neither of us bike often

32.4909515, -93.7011566
N32° 29.4571', W093° 42.0694'

2. Decide on a date and a time to meet there, and don't communicate until then.

3. Document your experience. You can do this however you'd like, using photos, video, text, drawings, or anything else.

4. Upload your documentation and share it online using whatever social media platforms you prefer, being sure to tag it with #theartassignment so we can find it.

Overall #theartassignment was a stellar one. It was great to catch up with John and talk about upcoming things in our lives. We spend about 40-50 hours a week together, but there is something awesome about both bringing something to share and just chatting about things we are looking forward to, or even things we are dreading. I would highly recommend this type of adventure to anyone. Let us know if you decide to complete the assignment!!! I would love to hear where some more midway points are and how you guys felt about the adventure!
