Five (free) Book Suggestions from Neil deGrasse Tyson

Last Friday, A2-D2 share the high 5 nerd icons and Mr. Neil deGrass Tyson made that list (check the list out here to see who else made the cut!)  In an "Ask Me Anything" on the popular site Reddit.com, a user asked Mr. Tyson "Which books should be read by every single intelligent person on the planet?"  I've compiled my top five from this list and included links to obtain the book(s) for free!

Before we get started, here is a disclaimer from Mr. Tyson himself:

"The one-line comment after each book is not a review but a statement about how the book's content influenced the behavior of people who shaped the western world."

1) The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine (free ebook) (free audiobook) - "to learn how the power of rational thought is the primary source of freedom in the world."

2) The System of the World by Isaac Newton (free ebook) (free ebook option 2) - "to learn that the universe is a knowable place."

3) On the Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin (free ebook) (free audiobook) - "to learn of our kinship with all other life on Earth."

4)Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift (free ebook) (free audiobook) - "to learn, among other satirical lessons, that most of the time humans are Yahoos."

5) The Prince by Machiavelli (free ebook) (free audiobook) - "to learn that people not in power will do all they can to acquire it, and people in power will do all they can to keep it."

Tyson expresses that if you read these works you will gain some significant insight into what has shaped the majority of the western world.  Interested in the full list? Check out Open Culture!  Thanks to their work in compiling, we didn't have to sift through Reddit comments (trust me that's awesome!)

Check back next week when A2-D2 returns with a fandom blog.  Any idea what she'll do since her fandom exploration is complete? Don't forget to keep posting your photos and thought on Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, and Twitter relating what makes you unique - what defines you.  Be sure to use the hashtags #ExquisitelyGeek and #NoOneElse14. Until then, stay exceptionally chic and exquisitely geek!
