Historic Stories of 2014

2014 has been an interesting year for the United States and around the world. As the final Art & History Blog of there year, here is a news wrap up of 2014...


March 8, 2014
Malaysia Airline Flight 370 was the first of two major airline disasters to occur in 2014, both to Malaysia Airlines. The airplane was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it disappeared. The plane and it's passengers still have not been located.  




April 16, 2014
On this day The MV Sewol sank off the coast of South Korea killing 304 passengers, mostly high school students on a school sponsored field trip. 


July 17, 2014
Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam that was shot down by Russian separatists over the Ukrainian/Russian border. All 298 lives on board were lost.  


August 2014
An outbreak of the Ebola Virus began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as the West African region in 5 countries. The two strains were not related, but both proved to have a 70% fatality rate. Over 5,000 people passed during this outbreak and four Americans were infected during their medical aid work. 



August 9, 2014
Michael Brown, 18, was fatally shot by a Ferguson, Missouri police officer. The unarmed eighteen year old's death sparked investigations, protests, and riots across the country.


August 11, 2014
Well known funny man and heartwarming comedian Robin Williams was found dead at the age of 63 from a suspected suicide. 


September 18, 2014
On this day, Scotland voted against ending its 307 year old union with England and Wales. 


November 13, 2014
European Space Agency's Rosetta mission achieved success when its Philae lander landed successfully on a comet.
