Bring In Riker: Star Trek 3

I grew up on Star Trek: The Next Generation and I have some fandom news that I'm truly excited about.  There is a Star Trek 3 in the works! Star Trek 3 is scheduled to release in 2016 to correspond with the franchise's 50th anniversary.

Though with every strong franchise, there are some fan concerns surrounding the movie.  You may have heard the name Roberto Orci as he was one of the writers on the first two Star Trek movie reboots.  He was originally rumored to be a writer/director on Star Trek 3 but this rumor (thankfully) has been quelled.  What is still concerning fans stems from his infamous trolling of fan sites comment sections.  Most of his trolling centers around response to discussions of rumored plot lines from his writing where he wanted to change the crew's timelines.

Though he confirms that this was his original plan, fans are hoping that his pull as producer will not make it to the writers room.  Recently, in response to an article on Robert Orci wrote
Stop blaming BR (Bad Robot) [for the idea to reset the timeline]. It was my idea so that you would not know what was gonna happen next. Nothing more or less. I Stand behind it. And it, again, is the reason why I make movies and you don’t.

Well, you can see why fans are not a huge cheerleader for Orci to write the third movie.  The problem is that the actual director doesn't seem to fit well with the fandom either - Justin Lin (Fast and Furious director).  Though Lin is famous for great action sequences, fans argue that Star Trek has always been about overarching plots that transcend the action moments.  So, who do fans want? Jonathan Frakes.

That's right! Trek fans want Commander William Riker to be the director of Star Trek 3.  Something to consider is that this isn't just a fandom's hopefulness.  Frakes has seen his share of the director's chair amassing credits from television including NCIS, Burn Notice, and even an Agents of SHIELD episode.  What continues to spur fans to voice their vote for Jonathan Frakes is his openness and willingness to take the directors chair for Star Trek 3.  In numerous interviews Frakes has insisted that he'd be honored and truly thinks he'd do the franchise proud.  The fans have become so enthralled with this idea that they've launched a campaign - #BringInRiker. Individuals, bloggers, and even some geek culture standard organizations supported the movement.

Since bringing in Lin, many feel as if the #BringInRiker movement failed; however, some are campaigning for Star Trek 4!  I guess the fandom hope will never die.

Until next time, remember that resistance is futile. Live long and prosper.
