My First Fandom

Walking into the children's section of a bookstore can be quite overwhelming! Right now, Amelia has just begun to like sitting in my lap for a bedtime story, but I must confess that finding books that are the appropriate reading level, have pictures that are bright but not too busy, and that I can stand to read has been difficult.

If you've ever tried to explain a fandom to someone who has never seen the show or been introduced to its characters, you know how difficult it can be. Fandoms are vast, often having multiple crossovers, references, and fan theories that are now cannon. The Taylors began working in the fall of 2014 to create a series of children's books to introduce their favorite fandoms to children with the goal of "bridge(ing) the gap between little hands and big fandoms!"

I had the opportunity to meet Brad Taylor and his family at Fan Expo Dallas to talk to them about what inspired them to write. Brad says, "One day, my older kids were trying to describe an episode of Doctor Who to my 5 year old (Aerabella). It was kind of comical watching her try to understand." Brad, the father of the family, is the writer and illustrator of My First Fandom book, but is not alone in creating the content. According to mom, Dawn, Brad is the Walking Dead fan, the younger girls like Supernatural, and all of the girls can agree on Arrow! They began with their own fandoms, and have even begun to accept fan request (that's how Amelia's Firefly book was made - by request of a fan).

Amelia, and mom, truly love this book! It includes all of your major characters (even Mr. Universe) and features some of the most memorable quotes from both Firefly and Serenity. I especially love that they included the theme song in the book; I've taken to singing it to Amelia when we are done reading and it works like a lullaby before bed. Talk about a nerdy child in the making.
Their books include Supernatural, Star Trek (where you can learn the alphabet), and Harry Potter just to name a few! The Taylors have been gracious enough to offer our readers a book so we are hosting a giveaway below! You'll have the opportunity to pick your favorite fandom book if you win!
Regardless of if you are the winner, be sure to support this family business. When chatting with Brad, he told me of everyone's involvement: "my 15 year old daughter Maddicyn helped illustrate the Harry's Magical Colors book. My daughter Klohie helped write Sam and Deans Adventures and Aerabella, my youngest, was the inspiration." The Taylor's have a wonderful product, and I cannot wait to share it with you!

    1. That's the one we have! We've even started singing the theme song from Firefly to her to help calm her down at night. You'll love that one!
