#100CupsofTea

On July 27th, inspired by The Nerdy Girlie and a former director, I began a process of documenting #100CupsofTea. I'm sure if you've been following my Instagram you've noticed an exponential increase in the number of beverages featured, but it's all part of my artistic journey of self-discovery.  When The Nerdy Girlie first posted about documenting coffee to honor her favorite show, Futurama, I do not know if she ever imagined how the hashtag #100CupsofCoffee would evolve.  As I near my 50th cup of tea, I wanted to check in with the main bloggers who have joined the hashtag and see how their projects are going and how this has changed their self perspective.

Megan at thenerdygirlie.com and Katya and Katyaowu.com

1) Up to this point, what has been your favorite cup?
Katya: This one: (see right)

because even though throughout this challenge, I've tried to make each cup look different and interesting, this is how I actually drink tea most of time! In bed with my dog! Also, this photo was taken on the day that marked 6 months since we adopted him.

Megan: Having JUST finished my series, I would have to say my favorite cup was my last cup. It represented a lot of things to me. The Futurama fandom that inspired the series, my Aunt who was the strong woman I strive to emulate and the completion of something entirely creatively my own. Right after that shot, I went away on my very first solo vacation. It felt like everything had lined up perfectly and at the right time in my life.

2) Do you find that you drink socially or in private?
Katya: Both, more in private because I mostly drink first thing in the morning, or late at night when I'm getting comfy in bed. But, I also drink a lot of tea when I'm having a catchup with friends and family.

Megan: My goal in this series was to do both. I wanted to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. As the cups went by, I tried to be engaged in my surroundings versus my phone or laptop, and be more open to the people around me.

3) What is your favorite setting for a nice cup?
Katya: In bed!

Megan: My favorite place for atmosphere is my home away from home Republic of Pie in North Hollywood. BUT you cannot beat a cup of coffee on the beach!

4) Has this project helped you learn anything about yourself now that you've been documenting a (semi) daily experience?

Katya: I've realized how much tea I actually drink! I haven't been taking photos of every single cup because most of them I'm just in bed, so I'd just have 100 of the same photo! So I've tried to take a photo when I'm using a different cup, or when I'm in a different environment so it's not just in my house all the time. If I had documented every single cup of tea, I would of finished the challenge by now! (but it would look boring haha)

Megan: I learned something about myself in every cup. I’m going back and elaborating about that process more on my blog, The Nerdy Girlie, but in short, I’ve learned to embrace being a single woman in LA for the first time in my adult life and making an effort to foster relationships with my family and friends.

5) Is there anything that has occurred from this project that you didn't expect?

Katya: Definitely how hard is to make a cup of tea interesting, there's only so many times you can take the same photo!

Megan: I shot cup number one almost as a joke. I never expected it go grow into a life altering experience. It changed me as a person. I’m finally growing into the person I’ve always wanted to be. I was happy at cup one, but looking back I’m even more happy now.

    1. You don't have to drink every day - I surely haven't. It's more about documenting the mundane to find the extraordinary!
