What is happening in fandom news?

....and now onto our originally scheduled blog post... .

First, let's start with the most important question: Have you seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
No. Okay. Second Question: Have you managed to avoid any spoilers?

Well you won't find any spoilers around here. I have chatted quite a bit with my friends, and fellow fans, about the film and I have heard some mixed reviews.

Some people loved it, some people hated it. Everyone was glad to see some core characters back as part of the cannon, except me...but more to come on that in a minute.

I think the general consensus we came to, over a couple heated debates and a few margaritas, was that it is better to view the films as a whole as three separate sagas (1-3, 4-6, and 7-9) within the universe instead of one complete story line. In doing so you can really enjoy the part each film plays in the universe as a whole.

It was obvious that Abrams was using this film as the set up for an expanded saga. I honestly think that is a lot of the reason that people dislike Phantom Menace so much. It feels like a set-up movie and this one can too. But this had the added nostalgia factor that Menace was lacking.

Now, to be honest I have Harrison Ford issues.
I don't have Han Solo issues, I have Harrison Ford issues. I just generally don't like him in his interviews I have seen or read. I know that his part was cut down a bit because of his recent plane crash. I know that A LOT of my friends really enjoyed his quippy one liners, but I just found them a little annoying.

Overall, it left me excited for the next installment of the saga, nostalgic about past installments, and proud knowing that Treyson has finally seen a Star Wars film in theaters. Overall, I think it was totally worth the wait. They did some interesting and powerful things to modernize the story for today's audience while still paying attention to the classical storytelling that is so well known in the Star Wars universe. It was a win, for sure.

Now, onto the other piece of breaking news the recent casting news of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Jamie Parker (Valkyrie, Lawless) as Harry, Noma Dumezweni (Doctor Who) as Hermione, and Paul Thornley (Les Miserables) as Ron. The big controversy over the casting news has been Nom Dumezweni is African American and historically Hermione has been played by Emma Watson.
Can Hermione be black?
Well of freaking course she can!

I for one freaking love it.
