Superheroes and Anitheroes Movies CliffNotes

The Superheroes and Antiheroes are taking over the Box Office!  We have some great movies coming out soon, and I have your cliffnotes if you're a non comic book reader or if you're just in a different comic book universe!

Deadpool (February 12, 2016 release) - Deadpool is considered an antihero though he was originally depicted as a villian when Marvel first introduced him.  He possesses a super-speed healing and a sharp witted tongue.  He often breaks the fourth wall making it easy for writers for both comic book and movie to provide some wonderful comedic moments. He's often referred to as the "Merc with a Mouth."  Due to a mental condition, he is unable to remember his personal backstory, but many theories have been tested by both fans and Marvel - including a time when Loki claimed to be Deadpool's father.  The movie, is meant to be the eighth installment of the X-Men franchise since we first met Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The premise of the movie is that Deadpool's powers came while trying to cure his cancer, and he is seeking out the man who ruined his life.

Batman Vs. Superman (March 25, 2016 release) - Moving to the DC Universe, the 2nd installment of the extended universe is through Batman vs. Superman.  I feel odd giving character descriptions for two of the most iconic comic book characters, but I will explain the proposed movie plot.  This movie occurs after the events of "Man of Steel." Batman decides to travel to Metropolis (Superman's city) to combat Superman who is seen as a threat to Gotham's future security - i.e. Batman doesn't trust that he's a good guy.  Fun note: Metropolis is supposedly a stand in for New York and Gotham is a stand in for New Jersey.

Captain America: Civil War (May 6, 2016 release) - The Avengers are back, but not together. After "Avengers: Age of Ultron," the Avengers are called on again to defend the country, but there is significant collateral damage.  Politicians want to regulate superhero activity (think X-Men Origins and even The Incredibles - this isn't a new premise).  This new government regulation leads to the Avengers disagreeing on if there should be regulation (Team Stark) or if they should be able to operate on their own (Team Captain).  Let's not forget the trailer makes it clear that part of this debate is centered around The Winter Soldier realizing that he and the Captain have a history and trying to reconcile that past.

X-Men Apocalypse (May 27, 2016 release) -  Is a sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past and introduces us to the first mutant: Apocalypse.  The theory is that mutants have always existed, but they have been "out" to varying degrees across the millennium.  Apocalypse, the first mutant who also happens to be immortal, is awakened and doesn't like the world he awakens to.  He wants to cleans humanity and start over! Cue the X-Men.

Doctor Strange (November 4, 2016 release) - Dr. Stephen Strange is the world's top neurosurgeon whose career is ended after a horrific car accident.  While Dr. Strange embarks on a healing journey, he encounters The Ancient One who instructs him in mystic arts.  The Ancient One, if you were as clueless as me, is a character who was born over 500 years ago and grew up as a peaceful farmer.  One day, his friend discovered magic powers and they began learning how to master their powers.  As all great super-friendships go, there was a significant disagreement on how to use their powers.  The Ancient One wanted to make their quaint village a utopia while his friend wanted to conquer neighboring villages.  The Ancient One, in an attempt to stop his friend, is stripped of his immortality, but ages much more slowly than an average human.

Suicide Squad (August 5, 2016 release) - Back to DC for our final film, your antiheros are back!  This squad includes Deadshot, Joker, Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, Amanda Waller, Boomerang, El Diablo, and Killer Croc - just to name a few.  The cast is steller, and we'll talk more about the Squad in a later installment!
